I feel the most controversial subject affecting education today is multiculturalism/diversity. Minority populations are growing at a rapid pace. Curriculum has to respond to this change in our society and developers will have a hard time meeting the needs of the various individuals.
I totally agree with Ross. NCLB is an unrealistic expectation. I do understand the philosophy of educating each child but the fact of improving on the indicators year after year addressed in the NCLB act is totally impossible.
I also agree with the NCLB. It is an expectation that continues to put pressure on all involved. I know that we must be held accountable. However, do we continue to add stress to our children. School is supposed to be a safe haven, not a place that you feel threatened by maybe not meeting the benchmarks.
Not to sound like a broken record, but I also agree with NCLB, like the above posts. It seems like the only thing that drives teachers now is having their students make a "good" score on the SOL tests. I like having standards that we have to follow, and I do agree that there has to be accountability, but this time of the year, and quite frankly throughout much of the year, the school has a stressed out feeling of "must pass test". This pressure is too much for our students. ~Jennifer Campbell
I think the "standards" movement in education creates a great deal of conflict among many constituencies. Administrators, teachers, parents, and students are greatly impacted by the pressure from federal and state governments to meet standards in education. I think that most people would say that standards are good, but the system that has been developed and the pressure that it is putting on schools creates a great deal of difficulties in education.
I feel that NCLB is an unrealistic expectation and needs to be reformed. However, from my perspective as a school social worker, the number of social issues that we deal with continues to sky rocket. More and More students can't concentrate on learning because they don't have a place to live, they are exposed to violence, have mental health issues and lack the general stability needed to graduate from high school.

ReplyDeleteNCLB by far..... In the near future a 100% pass rate will be in effect. This in my opinion is an unreachable goal.
