Chapter 11 Blogging Statement

Do you believe that teaching is an Art of a Science?

  1. I think that teaching is a combination of an art and a science. I would lean more of it being an art than a science. A great deal of teaching is about content, meeting standards, and assessments. However, the "artistic" side of teaching is personal, practical, and energetic. So much of teaching is about a teacher's influence and style of help children learn and understand. It takes a true artist and scientist to be a great teacher.

  2. I think teaching is an art in that it requires a teacher to reach students in a more meaningful way. Teaching as an art requires student/teacher connections to be made. Teaching as a science deals with new learning research, new learning techniques, and change within education. They both go hand in hand. Without new innovative ways of teaching, the art of making teaching personal would loose it's effect.

  3. I agree that teaching is a combination of art and science. Teachers have to be creative to find new ways to reach students and help them achieve. They also have to adapt to new learning techniques and constant change in education. They go together to have a teacher who helps students succeed.

  4. Teachers are artist as they try to mold student’s minds. Finding creative and original ideas are part of the artistry. The science of teaching comes from research as the teachers try new lessons in an attempt to develop better pupil understanding.

  5. I think teacher use characteristics of all subject areas, but I think that it is a art to be able to be involved with student learning. I guess in a way I think of a art as a specialized task that someone does so in way a teaching style and approach to learning are all artistic. In a science perspective it seems more research based like Dena said new techniques and changes in education.

  6. To me the answer is both. Teachers have to know their subject content, theories and methods then apply them by relating to different personalities, asking effective questions which leads students to understanding and insight and finally, inspire students to enjoy learning.

  7. I agree that teaching is both an art and a science. Teachers must consider themselves artists and be creative so that the diversified needs of all students are met. At the same time, teaching must be considered a science because teachers must rely on research and objectives that relate what must be taught and what works.

  8. I believe that it is both. Teachers must be knowledgeable about their content (science) and they must be artists in how they present it (art). Students are all different and learn things differently. Teachers must be able to relate to individual students and reach them in the classroom.

  9. I believe that they are both equally important to an effective teacher. Having the content knowledge and up-to-date with the latest research provides the teacher with a scientific background for instruction. Once the teacher has the knowledge and tools to teach the art of instruction can take place. This is where the teacher molds the instruction creatively to the individual student and the classroom.

  11. Since you've asked me choose one or the other, I would say good teaching is more of an art than a science. Look at the number of people and the research that has gone into defining why certain teachers are successful and others are not. It isn't easy to define...why? Because teaching is an art. If it were a science we would all follow a prescribed set of steps and all students would achieve success.

  12. As the text states "successful teaching probably falls somewhere between the two poles", therefore teaching CAN be a combination of the two. However, I feel like teaching is more of an art form. The way one presents the materials and even asseses the material can be an artform.

  13. I agree that teaching is both an art and a science. Teaching is an art because we must come up with instructional goals, objectives, and procedures that meet the needs of all students. However, teaching is also a science because we have to use formative and summative assessments to assess knowledge and create grades.

  14. I also agree with the majority of the previous post, teaching is a science as well as an art. A teacher must know their material to provide any type of instruction but in the same frame he/she must present the material in a way that is artistic. A teacher needs to differetiate instruction to meet the needs of each student, therefore teaching must be an art and a science.

  15. I agree that teaching is both an art - something that is prefected throughout your life (like your life's work painting) and is added to as new skills are developed. It is also a science in that theory and hypothesis as well as trial and error come into play on a daily basis. There is no one right way to teacher, just as science teaches us that there is no one right answer to the mysteries of life. And yet, the picture that the teacher is painting with that particular class is a work of art in the making.

  16. I agree that teaching is a combination of both art and science. You have to be creative to keep students engaged in their work to be successful. You also have to adapt to new learning techniques such as technology so that you can adapt your class in order for students to use their technology that they enjoy using to help them be successful in their classwork. 17. I believe teaching is both an art and a science. You need creativity to keep the students engaged at all times. You also need science to be able to keep data and do research and differientiation with instruction.

  18. I believe that teaching is combination of art and science. As a teacher you have to have a solid base of fact to establish what it is that you are teaching. The artistic side would have to be in the presentation and delivery in a meaningful way that makes students put on their “light bulb” so to speak. I also believe that teaching like many other things in life is something that is acquired with experience and trial and error. You simply have to find yourself as a teacher, find what works for you and makes you the most successful.

  19. I feel teaching well requires both Art and Science. The more creative the teaching is, the more learners teachers can reach. At times we all have to think outside of the box, to reach some of our students. As educators we also need to use research concerning best-practices to keep up with proven research about how our students learn best.

  20. I feel it is both. However I lean more toward the science side.

  21. I agree with most that teaching is a combination of art and science. I believe you must first be a people person. One must have the personal and social skills to make teaching effective. Although, so many people want to be a teacher but they don't have the know how, the scientific approach where facts are facts and research is necessary to become successful educators.
