Chapter 7 Blogging Statement

What types of changes have been made based on needs assesments within your school/county? Can any of these changes be a product of the social processes presented?

  1. I enjoyed reading over chapter seven in the text. It has really made me think about our community and our school and the needs that are to be met to have a higher standard of education. For example just about twenty year ago in our county there were classes such furniture building, hand crafting wood, because that is the types of county that we worked and lived in. We are fairly well known for having all the furniture company in our area. Now it's 2010 and there are hardly any left, as a result the education of our county has changed tremendously. The focus I would say now is on furthering the education of everyone that is willing to do so. We have a great community college in our area and now what is called New College that is offering many different degree program. I know this is within our county but it seemed to be very important and a good example of the needs of the community. I think this would be a social process because its a own turn around for a community. The socioeconomic status has really changed, and many social interactions has as well.

  2. Since I graduated 10 years ago from high school, I have seen a rise of interest in our students in the healthcare profession. I have also noticed parents really supporting their children in this matter. As a result, our technical school, in the last 10 years, has added classes called healthcare occupations. Also, our high school has added athletic training classes to the curriculum. Their is a huge interest in our community with our students and parents with these types of professions. I feel that this is a social process because of the community involvement and interest.

  3. We have seen many changes made within our community over the last ten years that I know of. We have had multiple businesses close including factories and even schools closed and combined. This was a change that had to be made due to the economy and our area. It made schools more crowded and many people looked down on the idea but we pulled through. The community college in our area has also had changes. It has added new programs according to the need in the area, especially in trade act classes. We also have the New College in uptown that offers classes from public and private Universities where students can attend at night and still live in their home town. The area I am from has accepted the changes within the school systems and adapted to them. I believe we have socially, economically, and mentally grown from the changes.

  4. We have had many changes in our schools/communities with needs assessments that have been done in the past. Our student services department has done needs assessments on social issues such as alcohol/drug abuse and truancy. The results of these assessments created the student services department we have today which includes truancy officers and counseling services in every school. We hope the services students recieve at school spills over into the communities they live in and makes everyones lives better. Our schools are currently doing a needs assessment to help improve our curriculum and improve graduation rates. This assessment was prompted by NCLB and new requirements at the federal level for schools to better prepare student for graduation and college preparedness.

  5. My school system offers many different classes such as welding and cosmetology. Students are also offered college level classes where they can gain college credit while still in high school. The county is also in the process of consolidation. Talks about it have been going on for several years. One of the advantages of consolidation is that new classes will be offered. Many opponents are against the idea and think that the current offerings are enough. I am not sure that you can every say that what is current is always best or enough. New courses would allow students more diverse choices. Hopefully, the students needs are being assessed in order to determine what is offered and what will be offered in the future.

  6. We have had many changes within our school system in the past. We have added vocational classes and college classes that promote a students' abilitly to thrive within our community. I think that this has happened due to the needs of students in relation to our growing community being assessed. I am concerned however, that with all of the current economic changes and budget cuts, student needs assessments will be lessened and less prioritized.

  7. My school and community have made changes based on student needs and the needs of society. We have integrated more technology into the classroom, to keep up with that need and also as previously stated we have added more classes which help the students succeed. Hopefully these changes will help the students succeed in the community.

  8. I agree with Jennifer that our school has made changes based on student needs and the needs of our society. We have integrated more technology into the clasroom, to keep up with needs and to keeps our students engagged in learning, which helps the students become more successful. Hopefully with the future budget cuts this will continue. I feel that technology is the growing trend and that our students will succeed in the community because of our changes. Jamie Cain

  9. Our School system has done a great job meeting the needs of students throughout the years. With Dual credit courses, Gov. school, and a terrific tech. ed program that derives from our local community college, I feel that we are providing our students with a jump start to their future careers. I worry with the current cuts, how it will effect the programs.

  10. Over the past few years our school district has realized the need to develop our students technologically. Significant efforts have been made to engage students in the use of technology (laptops, SmartBoards, Senteo, etc.) to enable them to be proficient as we continue to develop our global society that is rapidly relying on technology to remain interconnected.

  11. I have been teaching at the high school for 11 years now and have seen several changes. Several different class offerings have occured since the opening of Crossroads, a branch of Wytheville Community College. Many new programs have been offered to prepare our students for the competitive life after high school. Our school has also just gone through major renovation and has added smart boards to each classroom and an additional two computer labs. These additions has also driven our staff and students to engage the use of technology.

  12. Our school system offers many dual credit courses and a student can basically graduate and be a second semester sophmore. And at the elementary/middle school level we have have strides with 21 century skills. However, with the current situation some of the opportunities may fall to the wayside as Ross stated.

  13. With the use of technology there have been a great amount of changes in our schools. The possibilities are endless for the things we can provide students. This would include different applications in technology and having opportunities that were not there just a few years ago. With partnerships with the local community colleges, students can advance well into college before they even graduate high school. Many curriculum changes have been with the needs of our students. This would include vocational, elective, and academic over the last few years. I think there is going to be many more shifts in our curriculum based on the fast improvements of technology and what type of jobs our community will be able to provide to our students. I hope our community will be able to provide the things needed for our students to be successful and not fall behind because of our financial situation.

  14. There are several changes which have taken place at an elementary level due to societal influence. The most recent curriculum changes are charecter education, . Apeer intervention and programs specifically designed to prevent bullying on our campuses. All of these programs are educator's direct response to public concerns due to violence in our schools and society. Misty Zyvoloski

  15. I feel that changes have been made in our county at all levels. Technology has been integrated into all classrooms to keep up with soceity. Duel credit classes and vocational classes have been added to the curriculum to prepare our students for their future. All of this is being done to promote success in all students.

  16. I also agree that our school has made changes based on student needs and the needs of our society. As Misty pointed out, many changes have been made in regards to character education and bullying. Today, programs are being offered to teach kids about bullying and how to handle it. Technology classes are also being offered and students are learning how to use many important programs that will be useful to them later on in life. Internet safety is also something that is being taught in our schools today. Just last week, I had the ITRT come and talk to my second grade students about how important it is not to give out any personal information over the Internet. Most of these topics never would of been mentioned several years ago. As society changes so do educators and I believe everyone is doing they best they can to make sure all students are successful.

  17. Our school has made several new changes. The technology has brought about a significant need for not just our school, but all schools to meet the high demand for technological skills needed in the 21st century. For example, I had my first job as a 5th grade self-contained teacher and the next year the school was renovated with several new things. Then a couple years ago, I had the opportunity to take a job as a 6th grade history teacher and that school just completed its renovation. The difference in those few years is mind blowing. My old school had new classrooms, TV-Video equipment, and security cameras. At the other school every classroom has a smartboard and wireless internet. We also have three computer labs and a CPS system. There is a great need for students to embrace the new technologies that are out there, but the way our state keeps making cuts scares me. We have also established a anti-bullying program at our school to help with so many social issues.
Another big change in our community is the need for higher education b/c of all the factories and other jobs that have left so many people unemployed. Here at Carroll and Galax, they established Crossroads which has been a blessing for those who seek to obtain a higher education for a better job.

  18. A survey was sent out at the end of last year and some students felt like bullying was an issue that needed to be resolved at our school. We had an assembly to discourage bullying. Also, at the high school level, to help students be better prepared in their careers, a teacher cadet program, criminal justice class, and a nursing class has been implemented over the past few years. Our school system boasts about saving parents money in a tough economy and helping students be more prepared for college by having college classes offered at the high school free of charge.

  19. My elementary school has added Spanish as one of its specialty classes. This is due to a needs assessment, stemming from an ever growing Hispanic population. We have also implemented a character education and a bullying program in the last three years. I believe they are part of the social processes presented.

  20. I agree that our county has made several changes in the last year based on needs assessments. The bullying survey that was conducted in our schools, resulted in bully prevention training for teachers and students as well as grants being researched and applied for such as the Owvelus Bullying Program, which was adopted at our school. School policies were also changed as a result of bullying issues being separate from discipline issues.
Another example is the school budgets, with many teachers afraid of job cuts, the school system came up with a plan to cut funds while still keeping teachers rate of pay and jobs secure. I have to say that is a great outcome of a needs assessment of our funding.

  21. With the rise in drop-out rates our county has looked closely at finding ways to provide a future for all our students while keeping them in school. The high school like many others offers trade classes for those that do not want to go to college. Then recently, my county created a partnership with Wytheville Community College to offer classes and graduate seniors with at least a year of college under their belt. These two options have provided incentives for students to stick with school and give their self a chance at make a living in society.
