Chapter 2 Blogging Statement

What axiom that applies to the field of curriculum do yo feel your scho/school division needs to work the most on improving? Why?

  1. I feel that we need to work the most on Axiom 6-Decision - Making Process. I feel that we need to look more at how to better meet the needs of our special needs learners in our smaller schools. I think that we need to do a better job at involving parents of special needs children within the community in our decision-making. We need to ask all groups involved, "What is the best way to help ALL children succeed?"

  2. Right now my school needs to focus more on Axiom 5-curriculum change is effected more as a result of a cooperative endeavor. We used to have a chance to discuss our curriculum with other teachers in our grade level or a grade that is closest to ours and that has not happened this year. We would get fresh ideas on the curriculum and ways to improve our instruction occurred as a result. I think that all teachers need to be able to work cooperatively on curriculum in order to improve their practice, since there is always room for improvement.

  3. I feel that my school division needs to focus more on Axiom 5. Axiom 5 states that curriculum change is effected as a result of a cooperative endeavor on the part of groups. I believe that more people need to be involved in our community when changes are made to our school curriculum. I feel that sometimes it's just the "same people" involved, which is not necessarily a bad thing because they have a broad knowledge of the present curriculum, however it doesn't lead to many new ideas. Different social classes should be involved, along with people from different ethnic backgrounds, religions, as well as, students. Each member mentioned above could effect our school curriculum.

  4. I think that my school needs to focus on axiom 4 (curriculum change results from changes in people). There seems to be “a disconnect” with teachers to their role in this endeavor. Part of the problem exists in the leadership’s ability to cast this mission and vision to the teachers to empower them to be involved in this process. I think that our educational leaders of the school/school district need to make more of a concerted effort to involve teachers in this process and inspire them to commit to working on change. I think if more teachers were involved in the process, there would be ownership to making these changes. I see it as the role of educational leaders to cast this vision for the necessity of teacher involvement and the impact and value that they specifically offer from being in the classroom and with students. Administrators need to develop this time for the faculty and make it one if their priorities.

  5. I feel that Axiom 7 continuos process applies to my school. Currently our school has meet AYP and has been fully accredited for the past two years. The problem is we need to continue building in order to keep up with changing expectations. Attendance is always an issue that plays an important role in the AYP process and affects the curricular structure. Our school needs to continually make adjustments and provide incentives to those who keep our attendance rates up. As well our school has met the standards set by the state to meet and exceed expectations, we need to take into consideration is how many students performed at a marginal level and find ways to enhance the pass advanced scores. We need to continue to hold teachers and students to high expectations and find ways to improve character education. Many of our graduating seniors struggle post-graduation. Not only do we need to focus on academics but we need to teach our students how to succeed after graduating. We now track our students after graduation.

  6. I feel that Axiom 5 best fits with the field of curriculum that needs to be improve at my school. According to this axiom, curriculum change does not happen as a result of a teacher working in isolation, but it is brought about as a result of a group decision. I think that this is a very powerful statement and it holds true no matter where you are teaching. This year at my school the prinicpal has required all teachers at every grade level to attend grade level meetings at least once a month. So far it has been great, but the only people that I have been talking with about curriculum are the people at my grade level. Therefore, I have not had the opportunity to talk with other teachers at other grade levels about curriculum. As a second grade teacher, I wish I had more time to talk with first and third grade teachers about how they are teaching certain things so that we could share our ideas and reach a group consensus on how to teach various concepts. I would also like to share our ideas with parents so that students are being taught the same way at home. By doing this, I feel like everyone would be able to understand some aspects of the curriculum much better.

  7. I think that our division could benefit from axiom 4- Curriculum change results from changes in people. The main reason that I say this is that our county has excelled in technology lately and if you are fresh out of college you really seem to jump on board, otherwise it takes a lot of training and helping each other to really excel with technology. Its the wave of the future and some of the veteran teachers seemed to be set in their own way of teaching. We need the changes in people so that they are able to keep with with changing times that they may be faced with.

  8. From the schools that I was observing in Henry Co. I would say Axiom 4 would best benefit. When people learn to adapt to change the society can better be adapted in the school curriculum. The younger educators who are just getting out of college are fresh in technology and with the society and economy changing the seasoned teachers need to be willing to change and adapt to new things.

  9. I feel that the school division that I work in could benefit from improving Axiom 5. The division is currently looking at a new math program and they incorporating individuals to go and observe some other divisions that have the program. I just feel that whatever they decide to go with, that they will continue to work collaboratively with other teachers in the system, so that the program will be successful and not just be put on the shelf.

  11. I think my school could most benefit from axiom 5: curriculum change is effected as a result of cooperative endevor on GROUPS! When the science teachers sit down to create a curriculum map or benchmark tests, this must be a collaborative effort. One person does not know and understand about the science curriculum. Many people and students are affected by such decisions. More than one person should be in charge of major curricular decisions.

  12. I feel that my school could benefit most from imrpoving Axiom 5. Collaboration is not something that is focused upon at my school, nor at my district. Although it is improving district wide, at my school there is isolation. I do not feel as if we communicate among grade levels, nor across grade levels as we should. As a fourth grade math teacher, I would like to talk with the other math teachers in my school about when/how math is taught. I feel that would greatly improve our math program at our school. We are currently in the process of adopting a new math program, which I feel will help with the collaboration. However, it shouldn't take something new to get the lines of communication flowing about instruction.

  13. I honestly feel that my school could improve upon axiom 5 “Curriculum change is effected as a result of cooperative endeavor on the part of groups”. While everyone within the school feels like the basic “core” curriculum is fine, whether they had a part in planning it or not, it is the “extra” class, and curriculum of it, which needs improving. We have an exploratory class option, which has changed each year I have been a teacher at my school, each year, the core teachers who teach this class are told of the change. This is not a SOL-tested class, nor is it mandatory for each student to take it; therefore, the school is allowed a bit more leeway when it comes to developing the curriculum for this class. However, within the school there are not groups composed of those that would be teaching the class who help develop this class or the curriculum behind it. Therefore, there is a lack of “psychological ownership” as the book states among the teachers. If given the option to design the class and the curriculum, there would be genuine participation among the teachers and they would take value in the class they are teaching.

  14. I must agree with Annie's statement. Axiom 4 best fits needed improvement in my county. We have a lot of first and second year teachers that have brought with them new and improved ideas and philosophies that seem to clash with our current curriculum. Just as society has changed dramatically so has the teaching workforce. We need to start looking into providing a curriculum for our students that is up-to-date with society and the "new" style of teaching. Whether it be technology or methods that have been shown through research to be effective a divisions curriculum should reflect these personal changes in people. By doing so, the teachers are able to use their strengths in the classroom to meet the needs of their students. Zack Dotson

  15. The axiom that my school division needs to work on is Axiom 7 - Curriculum is a never ending process. Curriculum has to change with the needs of learners and as new technology appears. Goals and objectives have to be modified and it has to be understood that you can build on previous curriculum. Some better records need to be kept to let future curriculum groups know what has been done in the past and what has worked with good results.

  16. I also agree with Annie. Axiom 4 is at the top of my counties improvement list. Not only with technology but also with instruction. Often the veteran teachers lecture to students for the entire block which last 90 min. I certainly feel that the teachers who are just out of college apply new and innovative ideas and strategies.

  17. I feel that my school division needs to focus more on Axiom 5. Our division has been performing well in most areas. However, our student population is becoming more diversified. Curriculum decisions in the past haven't seemed to adress this more diverse student population. So now to become even more sucessful we need to look further into our community and get more diversified groups into the process, such as some from our Hispanic population

  18. I believe that axiom 5 is the area that my district needs to work on more. Collaboration is vital to the success of a school and keeping a good climate within the school system. I feel that progress is SLOWLY being made, but more needs to be done to include all those involved in curriculum development and implementation. Many times we simply receive memos from "on high" that tell us how things are going to change, sometimes it tells us why. In our classrooms we teach our children that working together is an important skill for life and career success, yet are we demonstrating this for them in our own work environment??

  19. I belive that our school division needs to focus on Axiom 1 at this time. Our community, parents and school division need to come together improve our schools and curriculum. People tend to have difficulty with change, even staff, teachers and students. However, if everyone can agree on a common goal, the change of consolidation will be easier.

  20. Most of you know, Jenny & I teach at the same school. I would also agree that axiom 5 needs to be significantly improved over previous years. I think new members of administration have made significant gains in this area at our school this year, but teachers have been shut out of the decision making process for so long, they are reluctant to to make a contribution now, even when asked. Like Jenny said, I have taught an "elective" class (in addition to my core class) now for four years. Each year, it has been a different class with a different title and a different subject. I don't ever remember being given an opportunity to provide input on the subject/basic design of the class. Its an interesting effect, b/c teachers are reluctant to put their "heart and soul" into a class/curriculum that they didn't have any "stock" in from the beginning!

    Thanks! Marlin Campbell

  21. The axiom the I feel that would help our schoool division would be Axiom 7. I feel that we try alot of new ideas and better records could be keep on what works and doesn't work. This way when new ideas come to the table we can look at our track record and see what our students could best benefit from in our school system. Jamie Cain

  22. I feel that the axiom that our school system needs to improve the most is Axiom 9. So many times there are changes to our objectives which makes us as a district adapt and modify our curriculum. I believe if we would use more of a systematic process instead trying different things that just a few people decided on then we would have more involvement district-wide. Thus, we as educators would feel more comfortable on not just "what" we are teaching but "how" we are teaching. I know there are some educators who just want to know what they need to teach and to leave them alone, but there are the others who love and care what they do. These are the ones who make our schools go and become successful. I believe using a more systematic approach would bring more of the small-school family approach to our school district as a whole. In doing this, teachers along with our administrators would feel that we are all working together to provide the best education possible for our children.

  23. I believe that Axiom 6 Decision Making Process is important for our school/school system to improve on. In making decisions about curriculum, I believe that we need to take a closer look at how we are helping disadvantaged students. I feel as if we are not meeting the needs of many of our students with special needs in the classroom. There is such a unified curriculum for our students and we need to make adjustment and services to these students also. They are a part of what our school is made of. I also believe there should be choices made with in each discipline as the text states. These disciplines should be given more specific measurable goals for their classes. This would help students get a “real life” experience in these subjects particularly the non academic classes. I know in my heath program we have developed a curriculum that reflects our students’ needs, not what the county would require our department to teach in broad vague terms.

  24. I believe axiom #5 is the one my school and the entire county if not state could really improve upon. I don't think there is enough collaboration within our school buildings, at least at my school. Most of our grade level teachers meet often but school wide and county wide sharing is rare. I wish we had more time to observe other teachers instruction. I also think state leaders need to listen to teachers and parent about what we see as our student's needs. Misty Zyvoloski
